Is it viable to carry out an engine and transmission ...
Sent to Mercedes Experts May 14 06:35 AM

Is it viable to carry out an engine and transmission swap on my w123 wagon? I would like to fit a more powerful, later engine and transmission - maybe a 3.2 straight 6, or even a v8. Also I''d like to redude the revs in top for more relaxed motorway cruising (existing revs quite high at speed) - maybe a 5 speed auto? Thanks, Ian.

Hello ian,

is that the correct year 1986 that would be a w124 then.

any thing is possible, but the amount of work to put a 3.2 engine or a v8 past the 1995 model year is not a simple task, with all the electronics that will have to be rewritten to operate in your car to block out the traction or the ESP, is going to be expensive. a more logical way would be a straight 6 up to 1992 or earlier, and or a V8 up to 1991, with out traction control, i have seen people put Chevy engines in the W124, just because they didn't want to get rid of the car. The 5 speed trans is part electronic also, you could find a low gear differential, something like 2.55 gear ratio or lower would be good for lower reves.

Hello mate. My Merc is a W123 - registered early 1986, the very last of them. (possibly built 1985, not sure - but definately a 123!).

I like the idea of a pre '91 V8 engine and transmission - perhaps a 500 or 560? That along with a diff change would be ideal.
I would want the speedo and brakes changed as well - to allow for the extra power/mph. Will all the bits go on from a single doner?

Lastly - I will need someone to quote for the conversion (me to supply doner) - you interested? Or perhaps you can recommend someone? I'm based in Huntingdon, Cambs, but would be prepared to travel for a quality job. Many thanks, Ian. 07985248327.
